Gilles Troullier
Gilles Troullier is a Godfather of biodynamically farmed, low intervention wines in Languedoc-Roussillon. A reviver of ancient traditions. He cut his teeth with the illustrious Chapoutier family in the Rhone, was entrusted with their Roussillon project, and 20 years ago ventured out on his own.
He is notoriously elusive. A gentle giant. We tracked him down, 4 hours later after tasting, chatting and laughing we squeezed out of his cellar followed by his shy smile.
He's a connoisseur of flavour. And we tasted from a concrete egg. An amphora. Old barrels.
One of our young stars – Miguel of The ChanChan Collective – is a new neighbour and he called Gilles who said, ‘be here at 9am on Saturday.’ Summoned, Miguel arrived early. Gilles drove him to every important nook & cranny in the terroir. Imparting knowledge and opinion in equal measure. He is generosity.
His estate covers 6 hectares facing the Canigou in the Pyrénées. The plots all at an altitude of 350m+, mainly on granite. He produces 8-10 wines each season in very small quantities from 150 to 1500 bottles. That’s it. Every year they sellout.
He likes to vinify plot-by-plot, use indigenous yeast, and age his wines in cement or old oak. Every season there are wines that sing the address, the terroir. And ones with a sense of humour or rebelliousness. Like Guerilleros...
He’s never sold to the UK. And we are chuffed to be his exclusive importer. At the London Art Fair two of his wines – Guerilleros and Maceration – were stars of the show. We are chuffed to exclusively import his wines.
